Kelly Turcotte, Leadership Coach and Consultant
Kelly Turcotte spends some time with Ginger, visiting about how fear and/or frustration -- or the avoidance of fear and frustration -- can be the focus of our days and the impact that can have on our lives. OR we can choose instead of avoiding fear & frustration to actually lean into them. And how that just might be key to changing everything! Leaning Into Fear & Frustration Fear and frustration play pivotal roles in our lives, whether or not there is a global pandemic. How often do you try to control them, avoid them, or feel the shame of them? In this session, we'll learn and practice skills to move THROUGH fear and frustration as we recognize they are part of our human existence and offer us opportunities to experience life rather than rush past the pain.
"How do I separate the disability from the trauma?"
Dr. Melissa Sadin, the Creating Trauma-Sensitive Schools Director at the Trauma & Attachment Network sits down with Ginger Lewman today to help us see how our Special Education Programs and Services can be remodeled with trauma-informed practices. And she leaves us with TWO tasty things both parents and teachers can do right now to start that transformation. Creating Trauma-Informed Special Education Programs The latest in brain research shows early exposure to traumatic situations (abuse, neglect, family violence, substance abuse, etc.) greatly impacts brain development and the ability to learn. The change in brain development has been connected to language development, memory, processing speed, and emotional regulation. This research directly affects those creating programs for and delivering special education. A recent study in Washington State showed that 80%of the children eligible for special education were exposed to early childhood trauma. Participants will learn how trauma impacts the brain and how it can be linked to dyslexia, ADHD, emotional and behavioral disorders, and autism. Trauma-informed IEPs will be discussed. Strategies for finding the impact of trauma in the WISC, WIATT, and Woodcock Johnson standardized tests will be shared. Finally, the answer to the often-asked question, “How do I separate the disability from the trauma?” will be answered.
Ginger spends a little time with Rachel Thalmann, Professional Certified Coach, and Communication Strategist, finding out more about her session at Bridging to Resilience virtual conference, November 12-13.
AND bonus: Rachel gives us TWO terrific pieces that we can do right now to become better coaches for our friends, colleagues, and clients/students. Coaching through Change: Keys to Breakthrough Everyone is a coach. If you ever find yourself offering advice to a friend, child, student, or colleague if only for a brief moment, you are their "coach." We all want to know what to say in those moments to help, but unfortunately, many of us inadvertently end up doing the opposite! Learn what ways of "helping" actually create resistance and codependency. And walk away with three key kinetic reminders of how to show up in a coaching relationship to begin and sustain change.
Megan Yoder, FACS teacher and Mindfulness coach at Hutchinson Middle School-7 is working with her students in unusual and exciting ways! And getting 7th graders to truly practice mindfulness techniques and strategies in their lives. For more information about the conference, scheduled for November 12-13, 2020: resilience.essdack.org
Wrap Your Mind Around Mindfulness How many times have you heard the word “mindfulness?” With the push for Trauma Informed schools and Social Emotional Learning, we hear this word often but does it leave you with questions about what it is, how to implement it, how it works, resources, student buy-in, etc.? Join us for hands on learning experience about all of the pillars of Mindfulness and how you can implement this in your classroom immediately and get results. We will even meditate!
James Encinas, teacher, speaker, author, & activist is an amazing human being who is once again, gracing us with his knowledge & wisdom. Listen in as he sprinkles down the calm assurance that we can indeed do something to help those around us in duress.
Self Regulation Techniques That Lead Toward Being Responsible This workshop will introduce participants to exercises and tools that aid to avert some of the long-term health impact of adverse childhood experiences. We will engage in the application of active listening skills, healing art, resiliency building, and healthy responses to stress. This workshop will also introduce participants to Capacitar, a popular education approach for teaching skills to reduce stress, facilitate self-regulation and promote self-care and healing. Capacitar tools that will practiced include breathe work, movement, acupressure and Emotional Freedom Technique.
Rick and Doris Bowman from the Bowman Consulting Group share how to turn our decidedly NOT trauma-informed Functional Behavior Assessments into true healing plans. And they leave us with one thing we can do right now to make a difference!
They will be presenting at the Bridging to Resilience virtual conference November 12-13. Learn more about how to get involved! Your Functional Behavior Assessment is a Fantasy: Creating Truly Trauma-Informed FBAs and Behavior Plans Stop chasing “temporary compliance” and start building regulation, resilience & skills! Traditional approaches to behavioral change using conventional FBA’s/Behavior Support Plans have long fallen short, and continue to fail children to whom they're applied most. With assumptions about the “why” of behavior based in kids wanting to “get” or “avoid,” they’ve left us with little to do but attempt to externally motivate through rewards and consequences. Come learn how evidence-based approaches, pediatric neuroscience, and the latest resilience research can inform the creation and use of FBAs and Behavior Plans that are trauma-informed, brain-based and skill-focused, and ultimately produce lasting resilience. |
